Most Educated Tribes In Nigeria

1. Yoruba

The Yoruba tribe is the first on my list. This tribe is widely recognised as one of the most educated ethnic groups in Nigeria due to its early adoption of Western education and deep-rooted history of academic achievement. They are very intelligent, powerful, resilient, and educated people.

In other words, the Yoruba people were among the first in Nigeria to embrace Western schooling, beginning with mass literacy programs introduced by Christian missionaries in Badagry and Abeokuta around 1842.

The South-West region hosts several of Nigeria’s premier and oldest tertiary institutions, including the University of Ibadan, founded in 1948 as a college of the University of London and Obafemi Awolowo University.

2. Igbo

The Igbo tribe in Nigeria stands out for high literacy rates, strong youth literacy rankings, and a cultural drive toward academic and entrepreneurial achievement.

Therefore, states in the South-East region, mainly populated by the Igbo people, regularly record high literacy and school attendance metrics within Nigeria.

Communal development models often fund scholarships, build schools, and support local educational infrastructure through town unions and philanthropic efforts.

3. Hausa

The Hausa people have a rich history of formal learning rooted in centuries-old Islamic scholarship, which has expanded into modern Western and professional education across Nigeria.

However, long before the arrival of colonial administration, northern Hausaland maintained a rigorous, literacy-based educational system centred on the Quran, Arabic language, jurisprudence, and philosophy.

Educated Hausa professionals are mainly seen across public service, law, academia, military leadership, politics, and commerce. There is no sector in the country where you won’t find them. They are eloquent, dynamic, and well-mannered.

4. Isoko

The Isoko people of Delta and Bayelsa states are widely recognised for their high literacy rates and strong self-driven commitment to formal education, frequently earning them a respected place among Nigeria’s most educated minority ethnic groups.

Despite being a smaller ethnic group compared to Nigeria’s major tribes, the Isoko embraced Western education early through the establishment of mission schools and teacher-training centres in the mid-20th century.

Historically, teaching became a core profession and pillar of the community, creating an early generation of certified educators and intellectuals who prioritised schooling for the younger generations.

5. Edo

Edo is a cultured and highly educated tribe; these people are ranked among Nigeria’s most educated ethnic groups, backed by high literacy metrics and a deep cultural commitment to formal learning.

In other words, formal education has long been viewed by the Edo people as a primary tool for personal advancement and community development.

The Edo people are full of knowledge and very well-civilised; they also maintain a strong presence across diverse sectors, including law, medicine, engineering, academia, and administration.

6. Urhobo

Next on the list of most educated tribes in Nigeria, is the Urhobo tribe. The Urhobo people are recognised as one of the academically and professionally accomplished ethnic groups in Nigeria, often ranked among the top-tier groups in regional educational attainment.

The Urhobos are the largest ethnic group in Delta State and maintain a strong intellectual and professional presence across the Niger Delta.

The community has produced prominent scholars, thinkers, and historians such as the late Professor Peter Ekeh, founder of the Urhobo Historical Society, who have contributed significantly to Nigerian academia.

7. Itsekiri

The Itsekiri people are recognised as one of the most educated and literate ethnic groups in Nigeria due to early European contact, maritime trade dominance, and an enduring cultural value placed on formal learning.

Because their coastal domain served as a primary trading port, Christian missionaries established schools and churches in Itsekiri territory long before formal colonial administration reached deep into Nigeria’s interior.

This early head start enabled the community to produce a high concentration of pioneers in law, medicine, academia, engineering, and the civil service.

8. Ijaw

Most of the Ijaw people are educated, smart and intelligent. They are always in quest for knowledge and development through schooling, thats why they rank among the most educated tribes in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the dominance of oil and gas exploration in their homeland inspired many Ijaw youths to pursue specialised degrees in engineering, geosciences, law, and environmental management.

But beyond the oil sector, members of the Ijaw people have attained high positions in academia, politics, medicine, and administrative governance.

9. Calabar

The Calabar people are recognised as one of the most educated tribes due to their very early exposure to Western civilisation and formal schooling during the colonial era.

Calabar hosted some of Nigeria’s earliest formal learning centres, notably the Hope Waddell Training Institution founded in 1895.

The region produced numerous national firsts, including the first secondary school, the first hospital (St Margaret’s), the first female pharmacist, and the first female politician, Margaret Ekpo.

10. Ibibio

The Ibibio people rank among the highly literate ethnic groups in southern Nigeria, primarily inhabiting Akwa Ibom State and parts of Cross River State.

The Ibibio are known as industrious farmers, traders, and skilled artisans. However, the high value placed on formal schooling yields strong literacy milestones across generations in the South-South region.

In other words, the Ibibio are educated people and are known to be early inhabitants of southern Nigeria. The Ibibio people are highly industrious and wealthy.

Conclusion

The tribes mentioned above are some of the most educated tribes you will see in Nigeria. Moreover, education is not something that belongs to just one tribe. Nigeria is a country that is filled with bright, hardworking, and educated people from different ethnic backgrounds, and each community has contributed in its own way to the country’s growth.

But in this article, we highlighted just the top 10 most educated tribes in Nigeria, and its for educational purposes.
